SOUND ART INCUBATOR 2013

Mochvara Gallery is proud and very pleased to start off in 2013 by a new programme addition, Sound Art Incubator – a production polygon aimed primarily (but not exclusively) towards the young and insufficiently recognized authors and artists who, in various creative ways, deal with sound. Having spent the last two years focusing on experimental sound art which was barely present in our local scene, we decided to take the initiative ourselves, stimulate the production of sound pieces by young local artists, and provide them with actual financial, infrastructural, collaboration and presentation support in executing their concepts and ideas. Ambition and will were never lacking – the project was formally kick started in mid 2012 when we launched our open call for sound projects which were to be produced and presented as part of the platform.

The first open call was aimed at Croatian art academy students in Zagreb, Split, Rijeka and Osijek in order to involve precisely the youngsters with little or no experience and “pedigree”, or in other words the ones we expected would profit the most from such a project. Despite the open and blunt “your idea, our cash!” approach, the results were somewhat different (although not surprising): over 40 authors applied, almost 80% of those from foreign countries and the region, while among the remaining 20% only several of the applied authors were actually students. Lack of interest, shortage of courage, insufficient project visibility? Besides, most of the works lacked elaboration (conceptual and production wise), but also ambition and drive, which led not only to a change in selection criteria, but also to the modification of the initial production-communication format of the Incubator. The priority shifted to a form of production relying on the process of collaboration between individuals of different focuses mutually bind by their interest in sound. With that in mind, the most logical approach was to realize the project in the form of a workshop which gives advantage to team work. The collaborational groundwork was laid by inciting the mutual communication of everyone involved in the project, which still remained open and flexible enough to leave space for improvisation and spontaneous changes in concepts. Perhaps it is no coincidence that the final project realization model is exactly the one we tried to introduce our audience with through the presentation of international artists on festivals such as CAMP – Creative Arts and Music Project 2011 and Cirkulacija 2 – Total Art Platform 2012.

The first edition of Sound Art Incubator will be presented live on March 23rd and in documentation form until the 25th of March. The workshop will take place in the small, and the event part in the large hall of Pogon Jedinstvo. The incubated crew - Tin Dožić, Sanja Jovanović, Kruno Jo& scaron;t, Gjino Šutić, Tamara Tokić and Ivan Jovanovac – are dealing with sound in their new works driven by their own individual preferences such as field recording, sound performances, biohacking and DIY. All signs indicate another exciting sound filled evening at Mochvara Gallery – and it would truly be a pity if you missed it!
